Emission ReductionsWith a total capacity of 13 MW, the Yugur run-of-river hydro project supplies the Northwest China Grid with approximately 50,000 MWh of clean energy every year, reducing CO2 emissions by displacing electricity which would otherwise have been drawn primarily from fossil fuel power stations.

The Region: In addition to regional GansuProvince requirements for renewable energy, The People’s Republic of China, as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, has an increasing requirement for energy and reliance on fossil fuel – the country has become the second largest consumer of electricity and the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter in the world. The development of alternative types of energy supply is crucial in enabling China to grow without impacting the global need to reduce GHG emissions.

Additional Benefits: In addition to the emission reduction benefits, the project indirectly improves the overall local air quality as it does not create the environmental pollution (such as sulphur dioxide) or solid waste problems associated with coal-fired power plants.

The project has also contributed to the local economy and livelihood of residents through the creation of jobs – 15 employees are currently working in full time operational and management roles while approximately 90 were required during the construction period. The project owner has also made a considerable investment in building a four kilometre road, which has a very positive impact on local herdsman and attracts traders to the village to buy locally produced goods (particularly sheep wool).

The TechnologyRun-of-river hydro projects use considerably less water storage compared to other hydroelectric power facilities or none at all, enabling the natural flow of waterways to generate power from both the potential and kinetic energy of the water. The main advantage of small scale run-of-river projects is that they do not require substantial flooding of the upper part of the river.
