Did you know that methane is 21 times more potent than C02 as a greenhouse gas?

Methane Capture Project

Methane Capture Project

As you know from driving around the countryside, animal waste smells! But it also releases a large amount of methane into the atmosphere as the waste decomposes. Methane is really bad for the environment and the greenhouse gas emissions damages the ozone layer. This project captures the methane from three farms in Germany and then turns it into electricity and heat.

How does it work?

  • Special plants have been installed at three farms which break down the animal waste
  • The methane produced is captured and used to generate both heat and electricity
  • The electricity is sold to the national grid and the heat is used on the farms
  • There is no waste in the system – even the digested manure is used as a really good fertiliser on the farmers’ fields

Methane emissions from animals are a considerable source of global greenhouse gas emissions and this project shows how the impacts of farming on the environment can be reduced.
